Black History Poetry Week

"It is in your hands to make a better world for all who live in it..."

This year we twinned our celebration of Poetry week with Black History. Each year group studied a significant and inspiriational Black person:
EYFS were inspired by the book 'Hey You!' and Year 1 looked at Mary Seacole. Next door, in Year 2, the children enjoyed a fun-filled week of learning on the famous football legend Marcus Rashford. Year 3 learnt about Maya Angelou and her use of birds to symbolise freedom. In Year 4, the children re-enacted the famous speech of Martin Luther King. Year 5 considered the story of Rosa Parks and the impact she made on society whilst, in Year 6, the children studied Nelson Mandela and his long walk to freedom.

Take a look at some of our impressive work....

Year 6 worked together to produce biographies on the life of Nelson Mandela and later formed sonnets, Shakespearean style, to show his love for his people.

EYFS enjoyed listening to the story of 'Hey You!' and talking about why everybody is important. They thought of the people who are special to them and who they might consider to be a 'hero'. They also, in the style of Martin Luther King, described their dreams.
