Strong literacy skills - the ability to read, write, speak and listen confidently - are fundamental to learning. They provide access to the whole curriculum and enable pupils to develop their individual talents, interests and potential.
At Holy Family, we believe that great readers become great writers and that reading and writing are intrinsically linked. This is why we proudly say “READING IS KING” - reading is at the heart of our English curriculum and a key priority across the school.
Through a rich and purposeful English curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to communicate effectively. Learning is placed within meaningful contexts so that pupils understand the importance of English both in school and in the wider world.

Reading and Writing Workshops
Over the years, Holy Family has been delighted to welcome a number of published authors to inspire our pupils and enrich their reading and writing experiences.
Through Maidstone LitFest, pupils have enjoyed visits from K. D. Greaves, children’s author and former BBC and Channel 4 professional and Gianna Pollero, author of the Doughnuts series. On another occasion, we were delighted to welcome Abiola Bello, bestselling and award-winning author of the Emily Knight I Am series and Love in Winter Wonderland.
These visits provide memorable opportunities for pupils to meet authors, explore the creative process and develop enthusiasm for their own reading and writing.
Spelling Bee
Each year, pupils take part in our Holy Family Spelling Bee, celebrating spelling skills while building confidence and a love of words. The competition begins with class heats, with two successful spellers from each year group progressing to the semi-finals. Words are carefully selected from the spelling expectations for each year group within the National Curriculum, ensuring appropriate challenge and progression. For our most confident spellers, additional challenge words provide an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and take their spelling even further.
