At Holy Family, our Geography curriculum inspires pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Through the study of places, people, environments and processes, pupils develop the geographical knowledge and skills needed to understand their own place within an increasingly interconnected world.

Our curriculum places particular importance on pupils developing a secure understanding of their local area before making connections with national and global geography. Each unit begins by revisiting ‘Our World’ and ‘The UK’, helping pupils locate their new learning within a wider geographical context and make meaningful connections between places and their own lives.

Geography is taught in focused blocks, with knowledge, skills and subject-specific vocabulary carefully sequenced and revisited as pupils progress through the school. Each lesson begins with ‘Review and Revise’, enabling children to retrieve prior knowledge, strengthen understanding and make connections with new learning. Visual cues and carefully structured reading activities support pupils in developing and retaining geographical vocabulary and knowledge.

Pupils learn to think and work as geographers, developing skills in observation, questioning, map work, data collection, interpretation and geographical enquiry. Fieldwork is an important part of our curriculum and our school grounds and local area provide valuable opportunities for pupils to observe geographical features, collect information and apply their classroom learning in real-world contexts.

Through the study of human and physical geography, pupils develop an understanding of the relationships between people, places and environments. They consider how places change over time, how human activity can affect the natural world and how communities are connected at local, national and global levels.

As pupils progress through Holy Family, they develop an increasingly secure sense of place, alongside the knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills needed to investigate and understand the world around them. We aim for pupils to leave us as curious, informed and responsible global citizens, prepared for the next stage of their geographical learning.
