Music
At Holy Family, Music provides pupils with opportunities to listen, perform, sing and compose, developing creativity, confidence and a lifelong appreciation of music. We want children to recognise music as a universal form of expression and understand its importance across different cultures, traditions and periods of history.
Music is taught from EYFS to Year 6 through the Charanga scheme, providing a carefully sequenced curriculum in which pupils revisit and build upon their musical knowledge and skills. Children encounter a broad range of musical styles, genres and traditions, developing their ability to listen attentively, respond to music and discuss what they hear.
Through practical music-making, pupils develop their understanding and use of musical vocabulary and concepts, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure. They learn to sing, improvise and compose and have opportunities to play instruments, including ukuleles and a range of percussion instruments.
Listening and appraising are important elements of our curriculum. Pupils learn to recognise musical features, express their responses using increasingly precise vocabulary and develop an understanding of how music can communicate ideas, emotions and stories.
Opportunities to perform individually and collaboratively enable pupils to develop confidence, resilience and teamwork while experiencing the enjoyment of making music together. As pupils progress through Holy Family, they build the knowledge and practical skills to become increasingly confident listeners, performers and composers, developing an appreciation of the significance of music within their own lives and the wider world.
