Physical Education and Sport Provision

At Holy Family, our Physical Education curriculum enables every child to develop physical competence, confidence and a positive attitude towards being active. We aim to provide high-quality and inclusive PE and sporting opportunities which inspire pupils to enjoy physical activity and understand its importance for their health, fitness and wellbeing, both now and in later life.

We follow the PASS PE curriculum, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive approach to physical education. Pupils develop fundamental movement skills and apply these through an increasingly broad range of physical activities and sports as they progress through the school.

Through PE, children develop skills including agility, balance, coordination, movement and control, alongside the techniques and understanding required to participate successfully in individual and team activities. Pupils are encouraged to improve their personal performance, respond to challenge and recognise the importance of regular physical activity.

Our curriculum also develops important personal and social qualities. Through working individually, with partners and as part of a team, pupils learn to demonstrate resilience, perseverance, cooperation, respect and responsibility. Opportunities to participate in competitive sport help children learn to respond positively to both success and challenge.

Curriculum PE is complemented by opportunities to participate in competitions, lunchtime activities and after-school clubs, providing pupils with further opportunities to be active, develop their interests and experience a range of sports.

Our provision is further enriched through our work with Kick Sports, whose coaching supports pupils and staff during curriculum PE alongside providing additional sporting opportunities.

Through PE and sport, we aim for pupils to leave Holy Family as confident, physically literate and motivated young people who understand the value of physical activity and are equipped to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.

PE and Sport Premium

The Government provides primary schools in England with additional PE and Sport Premium funding to support sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, physical activity and sport.

At Holy Family, we believe that high-quality PE and sport are an integral part of school life. We use the funding to enhance our provision, increase opportunities for pupils to be physically active and support children in developing the skills, confidence and enjoyment needed to lead healthy and active lives.

Our wider sporting provision includes two after-school sports clubs each week, offered free of charge, helping to ensure that opportunities to participate are accessible to all pupils. We are also continuing to develop our school sports teams and increase opportunities for pupils to represent Holy Family in inter-school competitions.

Through these opportunities, pupils develop not only their physical skills but also teamwork, resilience, perseverance and a sense of belonging, while experiencing the enjoyment and pride that come from participating in sport.

Swimming

From Year 3 onwards, pupils take part in swimming lessons at our local leisure centre. Years 3 and 4 receive an extended block of swimming across two terms, providing additional time to develop secure foundations in water confidence, technique and stamina. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 continue to build upon and strengthen these skills through further swimming provision.

Lessons develop swimming technique, stamina and water safety, with teaching adapted to pupils’ individual starting points and abilities. During the final session, pupils are given the opportunity to demonstrate the distance they can swim independently.

Pupils’ achievements are recognised and celebrated through the awarding of swimming certificates, helping children take pride in their progress and encouraging them to become confident, competent and safe swimmers.
