Welcome to Year 5 Term 1. We have an exciting term ahead of us.
We look forward to exploring our new class book - ‘Skellig’ By David Almond.
We will also be delving into the world of Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter known for her uncompromising and brilliantly coloured self-portraits that confront such themes as identity, the human body, and death. Using this to inspire us to create our own thought provoking portraits.
In Science, we will look at the properties of different materials and how they can be useful to humans.
This is just a snippet of what we will be covering this term, check back here weekly to find out what we have been up to.
We had the absolute pleasure to welcome the team from the Show Racism the Red Card Charity this week. We participated in an afternoon workshop, which aims to empower people with accurate information and knowledge, enabling them to tackle racism and challenge racist attitudes. We thoroughly enjoyed the talk with one of their team members and were completely engaged with all the fun activities provided. We loved the 'Platinum Rule' that they created based on the saying 'Treat others how we want to be treated', which, we as a school, embody daily as part of our Catholic ethos.
Mini Vinnies is a youth program run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society that encourages primary school children to engage in social justice and charity work. It empowers young people to make a difference in their communities through service, raising awareness of important social issues, and fundraising activities. The program aims to foster values of compassion, empathy, and generosity, teaching students the importance of helping those in need while developing leadership skills and a sense of social responsibility.
We have appointed our President, Vice president and Treasurer of our Mini Vinnies this year.

We have been lucky once again to visit the local Mobile Library Bus. We had so much fun choosing new books, especially finding new titles in the book series’ that we have been reading.
Prayerful Reflection encourages us, as individuals, to examine our thoughts, feelings and actions more deeply. This fosters a sense of purpose, meaning, and alignment with values, which can offer us comfort and direction. It can calm the mind, reduce stress, and create inner peace. We can seek divine wisdom and clarity for making important decisions and it helps us to strengthen our faith and trust in God. It reminds us we are not alone in our journey.
We participated in a prayerful afternoon, where we visited other classrooms, to come together to experience different ways to pray. These prayer activities create a space for reflection, connection and spiritual renewal.
We first started with prayers of thanksgiving, where we created ‘mood boards’ for all the things we are grateful for, acknowledging both the big and small gifts we’ve received. We then moved to intercession prayers, where they lift up our needs of loved ones, the community, and the world, seeking healing, peace, and strength. This was followed by prayers of blessing, asking for continued guidance, protection, and favour for ourselves and others.
