Christmas has arrived in year 5 , even though it maybe looking a little bare on our walls - we are extremely excited to be getting decorated in the Christmas holidays. We have been ‘getting our heads down’ to finish all our important learning so we can enjoy some fun activities next week. The results from some of you Science experiments are in and we have set up our last one for this year. We had the lovely Mrs Smith from year 1 come and teach an RE lesson this week, we throughly enjoyed the Christmas story and then comparing scriptures. It really made us all think about the coming of Emmanuel.
we have also been very lucky to have Jenny Endean, the lead paediatric diabetic nurse, come into class for a talk. Along we our amazing Eros, they both lead such a wonderfully informative session on diabetes, followed by a Q and A session.
After all the excitement of last week, we thought we would have a calmer week this week. We spent time researching Sutton Hoo, an Anglo-Saxon burial site in Suffolk. It is one on the best-preserved archaeological finds of all time. It has let us really understand what this period was like. During our PE lessons we have continued to hone our gymnastic skills, more Science experiments and turning our hands at practising mosaics in Art, filled the rest of our week.
Wow! What a busy week it’s been. It has been assessment week for us in year 5. However, in amongst the tests we have had some brilliant learning experiences. We have really enjoyed looking at the scripture from lsaiah, linked to our waiting theme. We then created our own interpretation - spending time after looking at everyone’s ideas and finding the symbolisms within them. Starting our investigation into reversible and irreversible effects, our science lessons are now full of different experiments to show these changes.
We have also been so blessed to have some of our parents come into class this week, to participate in our mathematical learning. We had so much fun with ‘Graffiti Maths’ - showing off our fractions knowledge.
We have had a lovely week exploring our new topic - The Anglo-Saxons. In RE we have been delving into our Advent theme, understanding the idea of ‘waiting’ for something and comparing the difference between good and bad waiting. During our Computing lessons we have been having fun with the Scratch program - creating a complete animation has kept us busy.
We have been so busy this week and it started with a fabulous assembly from the people at CAFOD. They showed us all the colourful bus that visits different town to offer medical needs. This is such an amazing, new initiative that helps so many children and their families in remote areas, that wouldn’t necessarily have access to healthcare. We have also had a blast learning a gymnastics routine in PE.
Welcome back to our second term!
Quick reminders:-
Wow, how fast did that first week go? We have had the great privilege in exploring the inspirational Rosa Parks this week, in tribute to the Black History Month. Click the link below for her amazing story.
After gathering information about Rosa, we created a narrative poem - spanning from early childhood, to after she received her medals. Working in groups, we each devised a Stanza then brought them all together.
We also took time this week to have our first official meeting for Mini Vinnies. We have decided on our first fundraising event and even started to compile a list for our next. Watch this space for updates.
